Maple sugaring has deep roots in Vermont's cultural heritage and economy, and yet the original sugar-makers of the region - the Abenaki - are often left out from the historical narrative. In this talk, presenter Alexander Cotnoir will discuss the lesser-known traditions of maple sugaring among the region's Abenaki communities, including historical practices as well as the resurgence of sugaring on tribal lands today. He will also discuss how the threats facing this age-old practice - bolstered by global climate change - are emblematic of the continued threats to Indigenous sovereignty communities face across the country today.
