In June 2016, the United Kingdom narrowly voted in a referendum to leave the European Union. More than three years on, BREXIT, as the process is commonly known, remains unresolved. It has created political turmoil, already costing two successive prime ministers their jobs; led to a shift in traditional political allegiances; risks fracturing the UK into pieces as pressure for Scottish independence builds again; and depending on the outcome, could significantly undermine the British economy. What is the European Union? Why did the British voted to leave it? What is the current state of the BREXIT negotiations? And where does the process go from here? This talk will unravel the mystery of BREXIT in real time, only two days after the British general election. Dr. Edward Cameron is a specialist in climate change, human rights and European affairs. A native of Dublin, he holds degrees from Ireland, Belgium and Finland. He spent the first ten years of his career working for the European Union in Brussels on issues ranging from environment to regional affairs, innovation, and preparing the countries of Central and Eastern Europe to join the EU.
