James K. Oliver, Professor Emeritus, University of Delaware, presents "Losing a Presidency"
The Constitution stipulates two ways in which a President may lose the presidency: (1) impeachment by the House of Representatives followed by conviction by the Senate of “treason, bribery, and other high crimes and misdemeanors” and (2) removal from office due to incapacity of the president to carry out his or her duties. The latter requires a majority vote of the cabinet. A president may also resign the presidency as was the case of Richard Nixon’s resignation. This presentation explores the dimensions, procedures, and ambiguities of these procedures.
