Racism as Public Health Issue

From the Vermont Public Health Association's 2020 Annual Conference. Keynote speaker Rev. Arnold Thomas, pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Jericho, makes a presentation focused on addressing racism in Vermont as a public health issue. Speaker Lisa Carlson, APHA President, provides her reflections as a national leader on the recent public health challenges that we have all faced. Speaker Melissa Alperin, APHA Council of Affiliates Chair, provides a perspective on the important reciprocal relationships between state public health associations and APHA. Dr. John Brooklyn, Dr. Harry Chen, Barbara Cimaglio, and Beth Tanzman are presented the 2020 Public Health Champion Team Award for their long-standing commitment to public health and their work supporting people in recovery for opioid use disorder in the state of Vermont. Dr. Maria Mercedes Avila is presented the 2020 Public Health Champion Individual Award for her long-standing commitment to public health and her research documenting racial disparities in the state of Vermont in pursuit of equity.
