Stuck in Vermont- Bill James Turns 109

The Bristol community celebrated Bill James’ 109th birthday in style on Saturday with a car parade outside his home on Fitch Avenue. Bill sat under a tent with his family and waved to friends as they passed by in honking cars, trucks, motorcycles, classic cars and a golf cart. Some even came by on bikes and a horse. Around noon, the sound of sirens filled the air as fire trucks and police cars drove down the street. Neighbors brought bouquets of flowers, sundaes, a teddy bear and a cigar to ring in this beloved community member’s birthday on July 5. For years, Bill rode in the Bristol Fourth of July parade, which was canceled this year due to COVID-19. You may have also seen him in local TV ads for a car dealership, hanging out in the Old Farts Club or as a member of the Bristol Rescue Squad. To quote an old friend, “Everybody knows Bill.” And the man of the hour was loving the attention, as evidenced by his frequent smile and signature laugh.
