After a brief thunderstorm in Lyndonville, a group of about 16 people gathered in Bandstand Park for a candlelight vigil to honor the Black lives lost to police brutality. Across the state and around the world, protests have been held in support of the Black Lives Matter movement for the past month. This small-town event was organized by a group of local teenagers from St. Johnsbury Academy. Ceirra Manassa-Curnin, Danierys Martinez Hernandez, Isabella Canete and Darby Ely spoke about the importance of the BLM movement and read out the names of those killed. The activists also organized a protest in Lyndonville on June 8 that drew dozens of youth. Asked what they call themselves, they decided on NEK Girls for Equality, and they promise that their work is far from done.
