Windows & Mirrors

The concept of "windows and mirrors" means that children’s literature should contain diverse characters and experiences so that all children can find representations of their own experiences and identities (“mirrors”) and be exposed to many experiences and identities of people unlike themselves (“windows”). Channel 17's Barrie Silver is joined by Elizabeth Bluemle, picture book author and owner of The Flying Pig Bookstore; Kekla Magoon, author of social justice-themed books for children and young adults; and Christie Beveridge Howell, Director of Diversity and Inclusion and chair of the English department at the Vermont Commons School, to discuss "windows and mirrors" and the importance of diversity in children's literature.
