Wood Gallery- When Women Were Furniture

A presentation and discussion with artist and educator Binta Colley. “When Women Were Furniture” explores the position of women in science between the 1600’s – 1800’s. Colley’s talk highlights a study of Mary Delaney, Maria Sibylla Merian, and Jeanne Baret; three female botanists/botanical illustrators who contributed to the field through their art, science and exploration of the flora and fauna of their time. These women defied the odds and were key in building the foundation of botanical and scientific illustration, despite social barriers placed in their paths.
